Take a deep breath and relax, because everything is taken care of - all you have to do is show up! Unplug and reconnect with the natural world while staying as busy or as free as you'd like. Resident wrangler and owner Hadley is also a certified yoga teacher with a dedicated yoga yurt on property- namaste cowgirls. Each day will be a 'choose your own adventure' buffet of riding, hiking and fishing, with delicious western cuisine in between. Maximum group size: 13. Maximum horseback rider weight: 240 pounds.

Trip Intro

Maximum horseback rider weight: 240 pounds. We have rated this trip as a 2 because of the wide variety of options available every day. You might choose half-day horseback rides with afternoons spent reading a book or soaking your feet in the river; or you might ride as much as possible each day with fishing and hiking occupying the rest of your time. The level of activity is up to you. For trips that are rated a 1-2, participants should be walking regularly at a brisk pace 3 to 4 days a week for 35 - 45 minutes prior to trip beginning.

Rating: 1 [2] 3 4 5.

This itinerary hinges around horseback riding but there is something for everyone at Bitterroot Ranch. Each cowgirl will be matched with her perfect well trained horse at the beginning of the week and receive tips and tricks to learn or improve her riding skills over the course of lessons and trail rides. In addition to riding, you can learn the basics of fly fishing and then practice in the nearby river or stocked pond. There is a network of easy to follow trails on property and by the river for self guided hikes too. Reading a book on the front porch of the lodge is always an option too!

The Bitterroot Ranch is located along the East Fork of the Wind River and guests stay in private log cabins situated on either side of the stream. An attempt has been made to retain the authenticity and rustic charm of a bygone era, which is reflected in the atmosphere of the cabins and old main lodge with its huge stone fireplaces and broad porch where guests gather for meals and relaxing evenings. The cabins have been carefully furnished and decorated throughout the over 40 years the Bitterroot has been open as a guest ranch. Many of the cabins have an interesting history but they have been modernized over the years; all have electric heat and showers, most have bathtubs and some have wood burning stoves. 2 cabins have 3 beds in them, the rest of our reserved cabins have 2 beds in each. There are 4 single rooms available on this trip.

Itinerary

Below is the proposed itinerary for the trip. As is true on any adventure travel trip, plans for any specific day may be modified due to weather considerations, unforeseen circumstances, new opportunities, and group interests.

DAY 1
Welcome to Wyoming! The wild west at its best. Today is arrival day so you can fly into Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) by 1 p.m. today. We’ll meet you at the airport and drive 2.5 hours together to Bitterroot Ranch, a family owned and operated dude ranch. This part of Wyoming has lawless ties, even serving as one of Butch Cassidy’s hideouts! Come discover the wide open spaces and air of freedom. If you’re driving, we’ll meet you at the ranch for our first official group meeting at 5:00 p.m. after getting checked in and unpacked. We’ll get to know each other before sharing our first meal together, a BBQ, and then enjoy the scenery with a bonfire by the river. (D)
DAY 2
Dust off your cowgirl hats and boots! Warm up your fly fishing cast! We’ve got a ranch to explore and ample opportunity to learn and improve our riding and fishing skills. After a hearty breakfast, we’ll gather at the corral to meet the wranglers and have a short demonstration of the riding techniques used on the ranch. Get matched with your perfect horse for a week of enjoyment atop a saddle. Learn to ride from our experienced ranch hosts, exploring the nearby trails and forests. Each day we’ll have the chance to ride in the morning and afternoon, with returns in time for lunch and dinner and relaxation in between. This is your vacation - all activities are optional! If you’re feeling like a hike instead of a ride, you are welcome to do so at any time. If the stocked trout pond on property or the East Fork river is calling your name, trade your riding boots for a fly rod! (B,L,D)
DAY 3
For those looking to perfect their horseback riding technique, you have the option of having ranch staff film you riding and give feedback on your form. Afterwards, those who feel comfortable in the saddle will embark on a longer scenic ride into the National Forest. Feeling a need for speed? In the afternoon we’ll have a shorter and faster ride around the ranch. The fun is just getting started as tonight we head to a square dance in the nearby town of Dubois. Grab your dancin’ shoes! No experience? No problem, the caller teaches all the steps. No dress code required either; all you need is a good sense of humor! (B,L,D)
DAY 4
Today riders that are feeling adventurous can load up the horse trailer and venture deep into the National Forest, checking on the cows grazing there. There is so much terrain around the ranch that no ride will be repeated during our week here! (B,L,D)
DAY 5
Feeling saddle sore? We’re in luck! Resident wrangler Hadley Fox is also a certified yoga teacher and offers multiple yoga classes throughout the week in the dedicated yoga yurt on property. The well-rounded, flowing classes she teaches take into consideration the different muscles that are engaged when riding horses. Today is another wonderful day of riding, hiking, fishing and admiring the postcard worthy sunsets from the porch. (B,L,D)
DAY 6
We’ll go for a long ride in the morning and then you can try your hand at herding cattle with a friendly competition! Four Adventures in Good Company cowgirls will attempt to drive ten Highland yearlings in numerical order from one end of the ring to the other in four minutes. Got all that? Yeehaw! Tonight we head back into nearby Dubois for a family friendly rodeo. We’ll see it all: barrel racing, team roping, saddle-bronc riding, bareback riding, and bull riding. Competitors travel from afar to entertain and delight spectators for the night, filling this small town with big fun. (B,L,D)
DAY 7
On our last day at the ranch we’ll pack a picnic and ride high into the National Forest, spending the full day out on horseback. (B,L,D)
DAY 8
What a week! After one last delicious home cooked breakfast, we’ll pack up and bid farewell to the ranch. Goodbye tumbleweeds, cowgirls, and wranglers; happy trails until we meet again! For those that are flying out of Jackson Hole, we’ll have you back to the airport in time for flights after 12 p.m. (B)

This was my first time traveling without family members, and I was somewhat hesitant traveling with a group of people that I did not know. That hesitancy was gone immediately and it was great to travel with other women who wanted to try something new and not necessarily in their comfort zone.
